Empowering our Selves ... especially when we can't envision possibilities

Updated: Feb 13, 2022

In working with clients who experience long-term issues, I continue to notice a common theme.

Whether it’s chronic pain, a long term relationship in which one partner is disengaged or being in an unfulfilling job, most people experience feeling trapped. And feelings of powerlessness, often from trauma, usually underlie stuck-ness.

All decisions involve choice.

All choices have consequences, regardless of how seemingly inconsequential they may be.

And everything is about consciousness.

I recently worked with a client who remains in a highly stressful and emotionally difficult job. Although he's earning much more than he anticipated, the man I’ll call Pete, feels angry, frustrated and exhausted. During the session, he recognized feeling powerless to make a change. At the end of the session, Pete envisioned a different life and felt optimistic in taking steps to realize his vision.

Even when we can’t immediately change our circumstances, it’s empowering and useful to recognize we have choice.

Making "choose" statements to our Selves can alter our brain wiring, move us out of hopelessness and support us in moving in a different direction.

In short, talking to our Selves can change our consciousness.

Pete said aloud, with intention, "I choose to go to work tomorrow while I open to something better." The choosing to, versus having to, is keystone to embracing freedom, integrating our power and taking steps to manifest healthier, more rewarding lives. Repeating our "choose" statements, intentionally and aloud, helps us live from an empowered place.

How will you choose?
