Thoughts and emotions play a significant role in what shows up in our lives. There are various schools of thought and traditions around creating what we want in life though it may not be as clean cut as it appears. There are many factors involved in our life journey including mindfulness, paying attention to our thoughts and consciously moving up the Emotional Ladder among others.
Notice if you’re stuck in a negative thought pattern and consciously shift the pattern by not responding to the last negative thought; instead, bring to mind something you enjoy, even if it is not related to the negative thought.
If we feel constricting emotions like fear, jealousy, hatred, blame and emptiness, we cannot move directly to expansive emotions like love, happiness, hope, optimism and contentment. It is easier instead to move to transitional emotions like boredom, doubt, frustration, impatience, guilt or overwhelm. From these kinds of transitional emotions, we can jump to more expansive emotions like well-being, compassion, joy, freedom, trust and enthusiasm. Move from constricting emotions to transitional ones and expansive ones by thinking about events, people or situations that take you from one level to the next in the hierarchy of emotions.
Initially, if you have difficulty moving up The Emotional Ladder, schedule time to feel intensive negative emotions. Set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes a day when you allow yourself to feel the fullness of the negative emotion.
Negative thoughts, when accompanied by intense emotion, result in negative manifestations more often than negative thoughts not accompanied by intense constricting emotions.
